I confess, I’m totally paranoid about safe scents…
Here’s why:
This is my childhood home. A century old weatherboard farm house in Country Victoria, Australia. My younger sister and I grew up with two open fires and a healthy (justified) fear of burning the house down. The fear of what would happen if we were not respectful of the potential danger that fire can hold was very present. I was yet to discover the power of safe scents – but the danger of UNSAFE scents was very real.
Candles were strictly for power outages. Don’t even ask for incense, or oil burners because the answer will be NO!
My Aunty and cousins had their house burn to the ground from an unattended fire hazard. My parents were sure to use this as an example in point. Fire safety was a concept that was both enforced and reinforced. what was and was not safe, and perhaps err on the side of amplifying our paranoia surrounding any potential fire hazard.
I loved the idea of candles, incense or oil burners; but I didn’t trust them…
As you can imagine, I took this healthy respect for fire and resulting focus on safety into adulthood. On the chance that I got a traditional scented candle for a gift, I usually “saved it for a special occasion”. Otherwise I would ensure that I blew out the flame every time I walked out the door- even to hang out the washing.
Spoiler alert: I’m still totally paranoid about safe scents – but in a good way.
Kinda defeats the home fragrance angle of a scented candle if you blow it out every few minutes right? BUT- no risk of burning our family home down either.
Flash back to 2013. My husband and I are living in our third family home in Lethbridge, Australia. We have three small children (and I am pregnant with baby #4). At this point in my life I simply couldn’t run the risk of having an unattended flame in my home. The intermittent squirt of an air freshener before visitors arrived or after an interesting nappy change was about as close as I would get to having a sweetly scented living space. It wasn’t ideal, but it was safe scents.
Thankfully I discovered that Scentsy = superior safe scents!
Scentsy arrived in Australia in September 2013. Unbeknownst to me it was only days earlier when I first saw the phenomenal Scentsy product range. Excuse the obvious pun, but Scentsy just made sense (scents!).
BOOM! Safe scents for my family home. I immediately wanted to buy, use and experience Scentsy. The concept had me hooked right from the Scentsy Catalogue page. Once my products arrived, I quickly realised that I could customise my safe scent experience in a superior way to what I had previously been doing, have fun and save money on home fragrance.
It was a natural progression for me to move from the choice to buy Scentsy, to the choice to join Scentsy as an Independent Scentsy Consultant. I wasn’t sure exactly how far I would go with this home business model, but I was excited to join the excitement and see where Scentsy could take me. Oh what a spectacular journey I started that day!
Now, I couldn’t imagine my life without Scentsy and without safe scents. No flame, no wick, no lead, no smoke and no soot- and that is only the beginning.
All of our Scentsy fragrance systems align perfectly with my childhood and adult values around home safety and candles (OK healthy paranoia)- safe scents just makes sense to me.
